1961 classic, The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster, is finally making headway in the TriStar studios. According to HollywoodReporter.com, Matt Shakman (Fargo and GOT Director) will be directing this “hybrid” film which has been through numerous rewrites and even a few writers. It will incorporate live action as well as CGI.
This story concept has been in the works since 2010! All studios have their reasons why some projects get bumped to the front of the production line while others simmer awhile. Why this classic story, filled with such creative and interesting characters, has been on the back burner for eight plus years is anyone’s guess.
“Shakman previously directed episodes of TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (of which he was also an executive producer for five years), Game of Thrones, The Good Wife, You’re the Worst and Fargo, among other series. He also helmed the 2014 feature Cut Bank, starring Billy Bob Thornton, Bruce Dern and John Malkovich. Shakman is also the artistic director of the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. He is repped by UTA and Principato-Young Entertainment.” – Hollywood Reporter
